Adventures in Baltimore (part 4)

“Evergreen”, built in 1858 and the home of John and Alice Garrett. The historical home is filled with art, antiques and architectural interest. It is well preserved, housing many of their actual furnishings so you can easily imagine what their life was like living in this house. It’s quite decadent as well. I mean, not everyone has a 23-karat gold leaf bathroom, especially not in those days! (The gold bathroom was one of HGTV’s “Top 10 Bathrooms”)

John was an ambassador to Italy. Alice was a lover of art and theater (and herself). Together, they were well traveled and rubbed elbows with historical figures worldwide. Not to be missed is the 3rd floor gymnasium turned into a theater so that Alice could entertain her friends with her own 1 woman singing and dancing show. She commissioned Leon Bakst, a Russian artist, to come to the US to design and decorate her theater. The home overall is ahead of it’s time, the gilded bath, an elevator… worth a trip to check it out!
